Demystifying Dyslexia: What OAH Is Saying About Dyslexia

This session will be co-presented with a practitioner with expertise in the field of dyslexia. During this one-hour session we will discuss dyslexia through the lens of an OAH judge, using a compilation of over 30 cases on dyslexia. For many years, we have seen a steady increase in students with a dyslexia diagnosis. IEP teams now, more than ever, must understand how to assess these students, and the types of interventions and support to provide to them, to ensure that they are receiving a FAPE. After attending this one-hour training, you will understand how OAH analyzes programming and assessments for students with dyslexia and will be in a better position to help your school site and district meet the needs of students with dyslexia.

Not it! Determining FAPE Responsibility for Students in LCIs, Group Homes and Private Schools

This last year, many LEAs saw in influx in cases where parents placed students in a Licensed Children’s Institution (“LCI”)/group home or private school. Did the placement constitute a unilateral placement in a private school? Are you the responsible LEA for a student placed in an LCI/group home in your district? What are the immediate and next steps that you should take to make sure you are meeting your legal obligations? During this half hour session, we will provide specific guidance regarding your legal obligations when students are placed/enrolled in an LCI/group home or private school within your district. You will leave feeling knowledgeable about how and whether to serve these students.

3:00 – 4:30 pm

Legal Updates/Legal Trends: New Cases, Trends & New Laws

Each year new laws are passed, and cases are decided, that change the legal landscape for LEAs. During this hour and a half session, we will update you on relevant changes to the law, as it affects students, as well as recent cases that are relevant and noteworthy. We will also be covering legal trends so that you can better prepare your LEA and staff for what’s to come. You will leave this session with a better understanding of the legal landscape, and with knowledge that will help you plan for next year.
